COLD AIR INTAKE SYSTEM FOR ‘03-’04 DODGE/CUMMINS WITHOUT FOG LIGHTS: Cold air is picked up above and behind the louver in the bumper. When moving, air enters through the louver and enters PSM’s exclusive designed air inlet port/air baffle. (Photo 13) Cold air enters into the bottom of the stock air box through a smooth bore steel reinforced, fuel and heat resistant thermoplastic rubber duct. The tightly fitted air baffle prevents hot underhood engine air from entering the air inlet port.

GRAPH SUMMARY: Under hood heat generated by the Cummins turbo diesel engine while under load, has a significant impact on horsepower and torque produced throughout the RPM range, depending on the type of air box installed in the engine compartment. Shield type air boxes, like the aFe system and most other aftermarket boxes, allow under hood heated air to enter the intake system, significantly reducing power when loading the engine during drag racing, sled pulling and towing a trailer up-grade on a hot day. Sealed air boxes, like the stock box, does not allow under hood heat to get into the intake, resulting in less power loss with rising under hood temperatures.
This graph compares the engine power produced between a sealed air box (PSM Cool Power) and a shielded air box design (aFe Stage 1), when under hood temperatures rise from 85 degrees to 135 degrees F. Note that both air boxes make identical power with 85-degree under hood heated air. However, when under hood temperature raises to 135 degrees, which can easily occur during continuous wide-open-throttle applications, the PSM Cool Power air box allows the engine to produce 55 more horsepower and 100 lbs-ft more torque than the aFe air box at 2900 RPM. The Cool Power air box also produces more horsepower and torque than the aFe air box, between 1400 and 2900 RPM, by an average increase of 28 horsepower and 60 lb-ft torque. This difference in power can definitely be felt by the driver in racing, pulling and towing situations. The additional power from a PSM Cool Power intake system will allow the truck to pull a grade in a higher gear, longer and faster, resulting in better fuel mileage and lower EGTs during that climb.
See Cool Power Technical Information for dynameter testing between the PSM “Cool Power” and stock intake systems.
